Analysis Summary

During 2007, the club has been running lap-timed handicap racing on a Sunday, and recording the times of fleet boats as well as handicap boats, in order to gather information on the different handicaps in use at Burghfield.

The calculations for checking on the handicaps are done by following the RYA described methods, as follows:
  • Average lap times are calculated for each boat.
  • The bottom 33% of results are removed - stragglers, capsizes, beginners, boat breakages and other incidents that might sway the results.
  • An average lap time for the remaining boats on that day is calculated.
  • All boats that finish more than 5% above that average are removed.
The rest of the results are fed into the handicap analysis and an average time for each class is produced. This allows a "possible potential" handicap to be calculated for that class.

The idea is to build up this potential handicap from as wide a variety of conditions as possible, in order to give each boat a handicap number based on that boat's average conditions - so in their favoured conditions they should do well, and in their un-favoured conditions they may struggle. I.e. each class should have an equal chance of winning at some time or another during the season, not necessarily an equal chance of winning every race!

Over an extended period, with lots of different results in different wind strengths, a suitable handicap for each class currently racing at Burghfield can be calculated. These results will then be fed back to the RYA, along with the other clubs that return their results, to inform them that a handicap adjustment might (or might not!) be needed.

The results of this analysis so far are shown here: Handicap Analysis.

For more information on the RYA methodology, and the various Portsmouth Yardstick Numbers that have been given to different boats, please see the RYA site.
