Oppie Club Helpers

Oppie Club Helpers

Helpers

The club can only work if parents help to run the sessions.

Types of Help Required

We need helpers with all levels of skills from instructing, editing web sites, planning Oppie Camp, Certificates, buying consumables, right through to the vital tasks like getting the rescue boats into and out of the water.

We request that helpers indicate which roles they can contribute to, from:

DRY " Help on the shore, rigging boats, getting drinks, Fuelling boats, running Group admin, getting kit onto the jetty etc.

FEET " Prepared to get your feet wet, launch & recover boats, help with Start (up to waist), etc.

WET " Prepared to go on the water to teach, from powerboats or teaching pontoon, sail a lead boat etc. Indicate if you have teaching or powerboat qualifications.

Each Group/Grade runs their own duty roster for helpers. If for any reason you cannot make your session, please arrange a replacement, and let your Group lead/admin know.

In 2007, due to the need to accommodate new kids in Start we plan to increase the number of instructors in start and run 2 groups for Grade 1 and possibly Grade 2. This will require considerable commitment from current and future parents.

Each Group is administered as follows:

  • Start Sailing - Shore based - Admin, Lead, + 10 helpers
  • Grade 1 - Pontoon & shore based - Admin, Lead, Assistant & 5 helpers
  • Grade 2 - Pontoon based - Admin, Lead and Assistant & 2 helpers
  • Grade 3 - Free Sailing - Admin, Lead and Assistant & 2 helpers
  • Optimist Racing (Regatta, Silver & Gold) - Free sailing - Lead and Assistant & 2 helpers
  • Topper / 4.7 Race - Free sailing - Admin, Lead and 1 Assistant
  • T/4.7 Regatta - Free sailing - Admin, Lead and 1 Assistant

As well as the help with each group, there are also several non Group specific Jobs:
  • Oppie Club Lead
  • Youth Sailing lead (T/4.7/Feva/...)
  • Leader for FYT
  • Fleet leader for Toppers
  • Fleet leader for Laser 4.7s
  • Optimist Fleet lead and Gold Fleet leader
  • Optimist Silver Fleet leader
  • Optimist Regatta fleet leader
  • Launching and recovering Powerboats
  • Fuelling powerboats
  • Registers and Administration
  • For Sale Rail Admin
  • Plan and Organise Regattas and Oppie Camps - several people
  • Edit the Web site Junior sailing area
  • ...

We have a rule that requires parents to be at BSC for the duration of OC, if a Kids parent can not be located the child will be asked to sit ashore.

If we don't get volunteer help to cover the type of instruction we have committed to give, we either have to reduce the levels of instruction or pay people to do the work. While this will considerably increase our OC fees, it will also be a major shift in the culture of OC.

Neither of these are pleasent concepts, hence the push for committed helpers
