Commodore:
Jeremy initially learnt to sail in his teens in Bosuns on a lake in Gemany. He however, quickly switched to windsurfing where he spent the next fifteen years attempting to drown himself and cause himself serious injury at various places along the south coast. It was on his move inland in August 2000 that he joined Burghfield and returned to dinghy sailing where he attempted to drown himself by sailing his 29er single handed!
Having survived the 29er, a Musto Skiff seemed like a stable boat to try next. Two years of swimming practice left him looking for a boat that would actually stay upright for more than ten minutes at a time and so the love affair with the National 12 began. Sailing with his partner, George, they now compete on the national circuit whenever possible, but that has in no way altered his love of the club.
Rear Commodore General Purposes:
Tony is a long standing member of Burghfield and does a huge amount of work keeping those areas of the club which we all take for granted running.
Having come to dinghy sailing via rather a longer route than most, and more recently via windsurfing before kids, he has been drawn into the RS 400 fleet on the basis that they needed someone beat more convincingly.
However after 9 years of holidays with Minorca Sailing it is comforting to know that the top boys are still not yet under threat. As a last resort Tony has recently aquired a 59er, which should make for some interesting spectator sport as he and his varied crew try to come to terms with it!
In the meantime he is looking after the car park and boat park extension, working parties and genral facilities at the club, and is alwats receptive to offers of assistance, or failing that, beer.
Rear Commodore Sailing:
Steve started sailing at the age of 6 crewing a Mirror in the Tyne estuary, and for the next 20 years progressed steadily through several classes including National 12's, Enterprise, Albacore, Scorpion, Fireball, Int14 & Laser, competing at national and international level and dabbling in sailmaking.
After a switch to competitive windsurfing, then a brief spell racing a Laser at Burghfield in the early nineties, Steve returned to sailing at the club in 2008, and can sometimes be spotted campaigning a Phantom or helping out with the Junior Sailing activities.
Principle Race Officer:
Nick describes himself as an occasional Laser sailor often found either in the committee boat or the RIB.
He started sailing in a Cadet at Frensham Pond, followed by several years fast spinnaker reaching up and down the River Medway in a Hornet and 4 years intense and rather successful team racing at university.
He had good 470 and Soling campaigns followed by a win in the National 12s crewing for his wife, Caroline. Then Merlins and 505s until his kids started growing. Weekends away then became populated 2 National 12s and a double trailer; they were never very far from the front of the fleet.
A move to Reading in 1986 started them at Burghfield. An ideal place for the kids to row while the grown-ups sailed. That didn't last as Optimists , 420s and now 470 and RS200 took over with driving, supporting, boat maintenance and coaching.
Somewhere in there we missed crewing in the Junior World Championships in Bermuda, an Endeavour Trophy win and a lot of fun.
Bosun:
Peter was introduced to Sailing some 30 years ago, when the lake was Berkshire Schools Sail Training Centre. He then sailed everything from a Tepco's (yes they have been there for 30 years) through to Cruisers in both Racing and Social sailing activities.
Following on from a spate in Hobie Cats, he parted with Sailing and trained with BSAC to SCUBA Dive for the next 7 years.
Growing up in the building industry with his Father, he then went on to train as an Aircraft Avionics Technician, providing an excellent with a good foundation for the role of bosun.
Peter is now also involved with the club through the Oppie Club with his daughter.
