Bowmoor Optimist Open Meeting 29th October 2011

Well done to the three Burghfield Optimst sailors who competed at this years Optimist Open Meeting at Bowmoor SC.
Peter Baddeley was 14th, Douglas Calder 16th and Harry Fox 24th in the main fleet.

Optimist Inland Champs 2010

Optimist Inland Champs 2010

Burghfield SC was again well represented at this years Optimist Inland championships held as usual at Grafham Water. The weather was kind with mainly 10-12 knots from the North / North west . The shifty conditions favoured the pond sailors and the PRO accepted the fleets offer to teach them a starting lesson, issuing 25 black flags and 16 OCS, the term 'negative sag' being used on several occasions.

The sailors were great ambassadors for the club James Taylor was 8th, just 3 points ahead of Fraser Woodley, followed by Josh Voller and Robert Baddeley who both had to discard starting errors, Paddy Gannon, who appears to have made the break into the upper ranks, slipped back to 40th after a promising first day. In Regatta fleet Debora Hughes showed the way, followed by Oscar Watts and Peter Baddeley

Burghfield is also well represented in the Optimist race management teams and safety fleet, Phil Taylor is Class Secretary, Dave Gannon is safety officer, David Baddeley runs measurement, Fiona Baddeley runs Regatta fleet, and a couple of our more prominent club members Caroline and Nick Martin ran the pin end as part of David Campbell-James’ race management team.

The Optimist sailors were all very grateful to Burghfield for providing two ribs to help with the safety fleet and provide much needed on water support during the event.

Hollowell SC Optimist Open 24th April 2010

Seven Burghfield sailors travelled to Hollowell Sailing Club. This club, based on a reservoir just north of Northampton gave a very warm reception to what promised to be a fine day with light winds. The event was shared with a Topper fleet sailing on the same course.
Having completed registration and briefing the competitors proceeded to the start area in 8 knots of wind. The Toppers has he first start with a course that led the sailors around a series of five marks around the reservoir.
The first race completed after 2 laps with Fraser in first, Robert in 4th, Joe 9th, Paddy 16, Nellie 18, Jonathan 22 and Dermot 25th.
The second race got underway under similar conditions immediately after. Fraser led the way with Robert close behind. At the finish, Robert managed to clinch the line in a Burghfield one two.
A lunch break followed race 2, also giving the race officer a chance to adjust the course due to a change in wind direction.
Race three had everything to play for with two Burghfield sailors in the lead. Joe let the fleet at the windward mark having taken advantage of the pressure on the right of the course. The three lap race saw the sailors all looking for patches of greater wind to gain advantage. Joe managed to stay in the front pack and attained a 5th, Robert just getting in front with a 3rd and Fraser second.

Final results are:-

Fraser Woodley 1 2 (4) 1st
