Weather

An Evening with Tim Hewson - 24th Feb 2016

A problem with the online form has now been fixed, please sign up as soon as possible

Weather forecasting presents a huge practical challenge to mankind. This wide-ranging talk will describe the strategy used by ECMWF (the European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecasts) to predict weather around the world, for the days, weeks and months ahead, to quantify the uncertainty in those predictions and to remain world leader in the field. A key point to be discussed will be how the output of our supercomputer is converted into meaningful charts and diagrams. These allow one to identify, amongst other things, when extreme weather is likely, and when confidence in certain weather parameters drops. Such information can be used by a whole range of customers, to better plan outdoor activities such as sailing, through to more critical activities such as protecting lives and infrastructure. Insights will be provided on how to get hold of the best weather forecasts for free.

Tim is more than happy to tailor his presentation to specific requests, so please add a note to your booking form if there are particular topics that you would like Tim to address.

This is set to be a hugely informative, and social evening - please book early!

The bar will be open from 1830, presentation starts at 1930, pre-booked supper will be available from the galley.

windy sunday

Windy Sunday makes for great spectating

If there is one thing you wish for as a race officer, it is a southwesterly wind. If you get that, then next on the wish list is plenty of it to make the race fun for the sailors and also to watch.

That is precisely what we had yesterday (Sunday 7th Feb), and the sun even came out to make for a challenging, but fantastic days sailing. True to form, the winds blew and I just couldn't resist getting the camera out. Click the image (right) to be taken to a flickr account of the days fun. Feel free to download any images you want, but if used in any publicity please could you acknowledge Jeremy Carey as the photographer.

Weather Update: REGATTA Fleet Cancelled

Unfortunately the Burghfield REGATTA fleet event will now be cancelled tomorrow (6th February 2016) due to the continuing forecast being at the top end of Optimist wind range. Our intention is to refund regatta fleet sailors who have paid minus a small administration fee to cover costs and will notify sailors on the most efficient way to do this.

The MAIN fleet event will go ahead as planned, subject to a review throughout the day.

For more information regarding this decision please see the Event Website

Sheffield Lock

Member Notice - Parking Sunday 21 February 2016

The Canal River Trust are holding an Open Day at the lock just down the road from the club. Due to the popularity of the event, the committee has agreed to allow marshalled and limited parking along the entrance driveway on Sunday 21st February.

All parking in the main carpark, and inside the inner grey gates, will be restricted to club members only.

We appreciate that this will mean that the driveway is busier than usual, but in the spirit of being good neighbours we would appreciate your co-operation.

Please note: the marshals may stop cars at the entrance to enquire whether you are club or lock visitors.

For details about the Open Day - please click on the image.
