Volunteer Requests - Urgent

Unfortunately, due to changes in personal circumstances or work commitments, we have a number of requests for volunteers and/or duty swaps:

22 Oct - Assistant Race Officer
05 Nov - Assistant Race Officer
11 Nov - Assistant Race Officer - DZero & Phantom Open
11 Nov - Safety Boat Assistant - DZero & Phantom Open
03 Dec - Safety Boat Helm

If you are available on any of the above dates and could help out, even if the role is not your preferred duty type (except Safety Boat Helms - only qualfied (PB2 minimum) and experienced helms may complete this role) and especially if you have not completed at least 2 duties in your membership year please contact as soon as possible.

Any offers to complete additional duties will be allocated towards your duty obligations for the year (or next year). I will re-roster any members who have been unable to find swaps.

Members are reminded that: Members are required to complete at least 2 duties per year unless the duty waiver fee has been paid (excludes Wednesday Evening Series). Failure to complete duites and/or arrange a suitable swap, may result in a duty surcharge being applied (currently £105 per year). It is YOUR responsibility to find a replacement if you will have difficulty attending.

Further details about all volunteer duties can be found on the website HERE

Youth Race Training - Autumn 2017

Bright sunshine greeted the nine sailors that attended the first Autumn Youth Race Training of 2017. Conditions were perfect for some racing practise in the morning so that the coaches could assess each sailor's skills.

Following a short break for lunch, we split the groups and the three Fevas practised team racing with coach Mark Stevens, in preparation for the ET Team Racing Championships, whilst the three Lasers worked on boat speed with Douglas Calder.

Team-raced out, the Feva sailors joined the Laser sailors to finish the day with three short fleet races, won quite convincingly by Henry in his 4.7.

However, all this sailing was not enough for 4 of the sailors, who decided to jump in a Feva and climb the mast!

We hope to see more sailors joining us for the next race training days:

28th October
2nd December

The Autumn training is open to all BSC members aged under 18, these Saturdays are aimed at improving racing skills alongside other young sailors. Suitable for all sailors, whether new to racing or experienced on the national circuit. Sorry, but Optimists may not attend these sessions.

Non-members may crew for BSC members for £5 and parents/guardians may crew for under 18s.

Meet rigged and ready for a briefing at 10:00. We aim to finish at the end of the day around 16:00.

Junior/Youth Transition Afternoon - Sunday 8th October

Are you ready to make the jump up from Oppies? Are you looking to try a new boat?

If so, come along to our Junior/Youth Transition Afternoon on Sunday 8th October from 13:00. You can have a go in a Laser, Feva, RS 200 and more...

It's on the same day as the last Oppie Club, so for any Oppie sailors looking to sail a new class over the winter, this is a great opportunity.

To help this afternoon run smoothly, we ask that you sign up for a taster session over lunchtime on Sunday 8th.

Burghfield Blast - Sunday, 1 Oct

What is it?

The short answer: Short course, rapid fire sprint racing.

Longer answer: We will try and set a course which will take 15-20 minutes with a finish on a separate line from the start but in the same area of the lake.

Initially, classes will start in the same sequence as for normal Sunday racing but as soon as all of a particular fleet has finished, they will be re-added to the back of the queue for another start. Given the right number of entries, we should also have a Juniors class for Oppies, Toppers, Fevas, Laser 4.7's etc.

In an ideal world, the races will take about the same length of time as a complete set of starts so you should have a few minutes to get your breath back and then be ready to go again.

How many races?

As many as we can. We will plan to race for about an hour and a half, then break for lunch, followed by another hour or two for more races. Depending on the conditions, we would be hoping for between 6-10 races per class.

What time?

The first start is at 11.00.

Sounds like a blast!

Yep, that's the idea. Short races are loads of fun. Lots of starts, lots of close tactics before the fleet gets spread out and if you have a bad race you get another chance almost straight away.

OK - so where do I sign up?

Just turn up on the day and sign in as normal.
