Sailing Committee

The sailing committee is responsible for organizing all of the sailing events and activities at the club. It is chaired by the Rear Commodore Sailing and consists of representatives from all of the major classes and groups within the club.

If you have any questions or suggestions just have a chat at the club or drop the appropriate representative a mail. We are always looking for help so if you would like to be more involved, please let us know.

Rear Commodore Sailing:

Principal Race Officer:

Ian started in Oppies many many years ago. His mother ran a Schools' Sailing base on Filby Broad in Norfolk so sailing was pretty much inevitable for him. After Oppies he sailed, Toppers, Mirrors and then 420s and Lasers. He taught at the National Sailing Center in Cowes for few years during which time winter sailing consisted of a Merlin Rocket, and International 14 and an Enterprise. He then carried on teaching at Queen Mary while at College.

He joined joined Burghfield with his family when their kids were ready to start sailing. He says that the club just felt right for the family when they walked through the gate and they have not been disappointed. Having started in Oppies all those years ago, he seems to have come full circle and spends a lot of his time with the Oppies again now.

Recreational Sailing:

Slow Handicap:

Doug Powell
Doug started sailing Mirrors around Portsmouth and progressed onto attending European and World Championships. After the Mirror a brief stint in a 420 within the Youth Squad gave way to the Fireball where Doug spent several years. Post University Doug moved onto some big boat racing in the form of J122, J109’s and SB20’s doing multiple Cowes Week’s, RTIR and other races in the Solent and in Holland in any available role onboard.

In the last year or so, Doug has concentrated on the SB20 and single handed racing - firstly the Blaze and Phantom and now the International OK Dinghy, which he is learning to sail with the aim of doing well at the 2018/19 Worlds & Europeans.

Doug is married and an approved Foster carer - aiming to get as many looked after children learning to sail over the next few years as possible.

Fast Asymmetric:

Fast Handicap:

Andy Maw

Andy started his sailing in Solos, as well as crewing in a range of trapeze and hiking boats and skippering small yachts. He moved on to the Vortex, first at Draycote and then at Burghfield, where he switched to the Blaze.

He is also currently regular crew in an RS400.

Laser Fleet: VACANT

Youth Rep: Douglas Calder

Douglas learnt to sail in the Oppie Club at Burghfield. After spending 5 happy years in Optimists, racing at Burghfield and other national events, he moved into Laser 4.7s. He now sails a Laser Radial, regularly racing at the club and other youth Laser events. He is keen to develop the youth section of the club and all ideas are welcome!
