RS200 & RS400 Open Report 2010
25 visitors joined the Burghfield’s home fleet of 14 boats for the RS400 and RS200 open meeting on 9th October. The wind stayed consistently from the east at around force 3 allowing a long run and beat course just as the asymmetric classes like. Chris Martin and Nikki Catt from Burghfield narrowly took the 200s from Dave Steed and Katherine Lovering with Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin in 3rd. In the 400s the visitors ruled with Richard Gray and John Dyas from Queen Mary ahead of Chris Hart and Mark Peak from Alton Water.
With 29 starters the 200s were a very competitive fleet. The racing was so close that the final result was not sorted until the last mark of the last race. In race 1 Chris Humphrey and Noelle Vidal took and early lead together with Charlie Roome and Rachel Morris extended to finish well ahead of Chris and Nikki in third place. However race 2 was not so good for our two front runners. Charlie and Rachel fell foul of the black flag. Chris and Noelle arrived at the first mark first but an over enthusiastic tack capsized them and they left it last. Trudie Fell and Sam Child then set the pace for 3 laps but in the end were squeezed out by Dave and Katherine and Ian and Ellie.
Race 3 was very tense. Chris and Nikki took a comfortable lead and covered carefully. Behind them Dave and Katherine needed to finish second to take the event. Ian and Ellie sailed a fabulous last run to pass Dave and Katherine with room at the last mark. This recovery from restarting after an early start to 2nd lifted Ian and Ellie to 3rd place
The 400s had a smaller fleet, but they had good racing. Ben and Steve Hendon from Blithfield managed 2nd place in the first two races, but had to give best to Richard and John who won races 2 and 3 and to Chris and Mark who took race 1.
RS 200's at Garda July 2010
Eleven Burghfield sailors travelled to the RS Eurocup event at Riva del Garda. It is a long way to go to sail against the same people that one meets at home events, but the scenery is stunning and the winds have a reputation of being great so it has to be done at least once in a sailing career. We were treated to a whole range of sailing conditions with lots of force 5/6 with bright sunshine making it well worth the effort.
Chris Martin, usually seen at Burghfield in a 200 sailed with Nick Charles in an 800. Despite only having had the boat a few months they were very pleased to score some good results in the fleet of 50 in the strong winds.
There were 76 RS200s racing. Katherine Lovering and Helen Winward found the strong winds very hard but were able to sail a full series and get in some good sailing. Rob and Jan Martin were a bit disappointed with their 30th. They had a number of good races but one gear failure and one capsize , both near the finish when in good positions made them lower than hoped for.
Toby and Rachel Ashton have a new boat for this year. They were consistently in the teens and early twenties, but 2 premature starts in good races kept them at 23rd. Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin had blistering speed some of the time, However they seemed distracted by a number of issues relating to gear , sleep, cocktails and breakfast. They were managed 21st overall. .
Caroline and Nick Martin improved all week to finish the last race in 4th but were awarded a win because the first three boats started early. This was enough to put them in 7th place.
Overall it was extremely good sailing, but with winds often well over 20 knots, boats and crews took a pounding, hence the capsizes breakages and loss of concentration. Back now to Burghfield, that venue of extreme beauty and demands……

RS200 (SEAS) Open, 24th October 2009
Report
Twenty eight boats, including several from the top 20 at the recent Inland Championships enjoyed a good day of racing at Burghfield for the final event of the RS200 South Eastern Area series. The wind varied from south to west and from force 2 to force 4, but Chris Catt and Ally Martin (Downs/Burghfield) comfortably won all three races to win the event from Charlotte Savage and MJ Gifford from Bristol Corinthian who finished strongly with two second places. Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin were third overall and Chris Martin and Claire Hunter fifth showing how strong the club RS200 fleet is at present.
For the first race the wind was across the lake making the beats shifty. The fleet got away to a clean start and were led at the first mark by Sam Maxfield and Hannah Marsden (Hayling Island), Catt and Sarah Allen and Vicky Lenz. As the race progressed, Allen and Catt pulled out a long lead over the rest of the fleet with Catt getting the upper hand by the finish. Andy and Jill Peters (Queen Mary), recently second at The RS200 Inlands worked through the fleet to head the bunch in third place.
Race 2 started in drizzle and what appeared to be the same southerly wind. This time a recall and black flag were needed to get the fleet away. Within minutes of the start the wind started to veer giving an advantage to those on the right hand side of the beat. Again Catt and Maxfield led around the first mark. But with squarer runs on the course Savage was able to pick her way through and challenge Catt, although not pass him. This time Maxfield was able to retain his 3rd place.
The wind stayed in the west and the third race was sailed on a run and beat course. With the sun shining and a force 4 breeze this was top class sailing. Catt passed the helming duties to Martin but this made no difference and they again led from start to finish ahead of Savage. Behind them Ian Sharps and Ellie Martin (Burghfield) were able hold off the Peters, taking third place overall from them on countback.
Andy and Jill Peters have done more than enough over this summer to win the SEAS series overall.
1st - Chris Catt & Ally Martin - Burghfield
2nd - Charlotte Savage & MJ Gifford - BCYC
3rd - Ian Sharps & Ellie Martin- Burghfield
4th - Andrew Peters & Jill Peters - Queen Mary SC
5th - Chris Martin & Claire Hunter - Burghfield
6th - Sarah Allen & Vicky Lenz
RS200 & RS400 Open Report 2008
25th October 2008
27 RS200 and 9 RS400 turned up at Burghfield on Saturday for the last open of the season. For the 200s it was the final event of the South East Area travellers trophy, to add some extra urgency to those in the running.
Though plenty of wind was forecast to arrive, at 10am it was still extremely light so the first race was postponed till 11:30. The wind then filled in from the South and clocked round to South West enabling a Windward/Leward course to be laid down the lake.
Both fleets got away first time, with everyone hiking and the 400 planing occasionally downwind.
Locals Rob & Jan Martin won the first two races in the 400s, and then bowed out for the 3rd letting Christopher Martin and Daniel Martin take the last race. Michael Simms and Andrew George had a close but successful battle, with Andy Leigh and Chris Neal for second spot.
In the 200s racing was closer with a different winner in each race. Race one saw Steve Dunn out in front, but he was OCS and the win went Pete Vincent and Tessa Nichols. Steve Greaves and Susanna Bickford took second and Nick Charles and Helen Hiteman worked they way through the fleet to third place.
After lunch, the gusts freshened and the place changing seemed to get more frantic on the runs, as the boats that got it right were fast planning and the penalty for missing the gust increased. In Race two Rob Janering and Marianthe Evangeledis got first place, with Nick and Helen second and Steve Dunn in third.
In Race three Andy Cornah and Hamish Walker port tack the fleet, but it was Chris & Nicky Catt who started by the committee boat who took the best of the shifts and got to the windward mark first and held on to win from Nick & Helen and Rob & Marianthe.
So Rob and Marianthe won on count back from Nick & Helen, with Chris & Nicky one point behind, and Pete & Tessa 4th just another point behind. Further down the fleet it was a game of snakes and ladders, with plenty of shifts to gain places and plenty of easy ways to lose them.

2007 Gul RS200 Club Championship
We are now halfway through the RS Club Championship qualifiers.
Everybody who has sailed one race can still qualify but a pattern is starting to emerge.
Rob and Chris Martin look reasonably safe to qualify but after that it is all in the melting pot.
Ellie has some good races,
Caroline has a first but
Paul and Corinne are beginning to get some good results and are improving fast. The outsiders are
Richard & Sue and
Andrew and Celine who have a few results but, in the words of the examiner, "could do better" and very well might do so!

2007: Open Meeting and Training
The 2007 Open Meeting took place on
March 11th 2007. Details of the results etc. are

Club Training - 25th November, 2006
There was a training day on 25th November, 2006.
The training was run by some of the more experienced sailors from Burghfield, and was aimed at helping to improve how you sail the RS200 at Burghfield - so, nothing about waves and quite a lot about wind shifts!
The RS400s were on the water as well on the day, so we had enough people around to open the bar etc. The forecast of 50mph plus put off a number of people, but the actual wind of force 3 was ideal for everyone who made the effort.
Club Championships Update - 2006
6 races sailed – ten entries so far… That means we’ve got 3 places in the team for the finals in September – and at half way through the series, it’s wide open.
Rob Martin and Alana Webb are well in the lead having sailed all the races, consistently finishing in the top 2. Martin Jones and Kerry are second, closely followed by Ellie and Hannah, however as soon as other people get more races under their belts everything could change.
Race 5 and 6 (May 21st) were exciting. Blustery conditions saw (I think) all seven boats enjoying a swim at some stage and an increase in burgee sales for Mayday. Chris Martin and guest crew sailed over the horizon to take two bullets leaving the rest of us to fight it out behind them.
RS200 News
RS200 Burghfield Open Meeting – Sunday 12th March
Sunday saw 28 RS200s turn out for the Burghfield Open, despite the forecast of snow. Three exciting races were sailed in gusty and shifty Burghfield conditions with everything from Force 2 to Force 4. It felt (mid-fleet) like a game of snakes and ladders – so many places could be gained and lost in an instant! However Nick Charles and Jules Kingsnorth sailed consistently to take the title from locals Jon Lewis and KT Nichol.
RS200 Training – Saturday 11th March
On Saturday eight boats benefited from expert coaching by Jon and Trudie. A successful day was had on all levels – one boat hoisting their spinnaker for the first time ever, while others prepared for their first Open Meeting win!
2006 Gul RS200 Club Championships
Here are the details on how to qualify for the 2006 RS200 Club Championship. This year the championships are to be held at Datchet Sailing Club on the 16th/17th September along with the RS400’s.
The best six results from the following twelve races will count towards the final results. The top five qualifiers will be invited to enter the club championship finals at Dachet.
The official rules are at
RS200 Club Championships rules
The more Burghfield boats that take part in the qualifying series = more entries into the finals. We need 16+ boats to take part to meet our target to enter the full five boats. As soon as we have completed the 12 races we will announce the winners to be invited to represent the club at the 2006 Club Championships.
RS200
RS200s race in the
Fast Handicap Fleet and are the fastest growing class at the club at the moment. Designed for those who want the excitement of fast, close asymmetric racing but without the need for as much bulk and muscle as some other classes, the RS200 has broad appeal to couples, family and friends who want to sail together. The RS200 looks set to be one of the main racing classes in the club in the near future.
