RS400

Two-person hiking boat with asymmetric spinnaker. Crew weight of 135-165Kg (22-26 stone, but they are raced regularly at Burghfield with anywhere between 20 and 30 stone). Designed in 1993, with current numbers over 1300. Fibreglass. Available second hand from around £2,500, up to £9,500 for a fully equipped new one. This is the top, high-performance, 2-person racing boat at Burghfield. Although, with the asymmetric kite, its also great fun for just sailing. The 400 is less "frisky" than the smaller RS200, but more of a handful in a strong breeze. Good racing is guaranteed at Burghfield for all people, from those placing within the top ten at the Nationals through to those new to sailing. On more open waters this is often a two man boat but at Burghfield there are a large number of female crews who perform very well in this class, so as usual it's more down to ability than boat.

Burghfield sailing club hosts a large fleet of RS400's and welcomes sailors of all abilities to sail and race at the club. The fleet is very friendly and helpful making the club ideal for any novice 400 sailors starting out. Members are always ready to offer advice regarding boat tuning and maintenance including the club's chandler who is also an RS400 sailor. Newcomers to the fleet will soon find themselves enjoying the clubs facilities on the water and in the bar afterwards. The 400's always seem to be the last to leave!

Racing the RS400 at Burghfield is both competitive and challenging. Ability within the fleet ranges from the nationally competitive to competent club racer. We have also welcomed a number of new starters into the fleet, both people returning to sailing after a few years gap and those who haven't done much dinghy sailing in the past. Additionally Burghfield hosts an RS400 open every year and runs a number of training days coached by some of the top sailors from the club or open circuit.

More information about the RS400 can be found on the RS website - www.rssailing.com, see the links page for the class association website.
