Burghfield Sailing Club has an active Junior and Youth sailing programme taking sailors from their first time in a boat through to competing in national squads.
Many junior sailors make their first step into sailing in the popular Optimist. From April to October Burghfield Sailing Club runs a massively popular Oppie Club for junior sailors on Sunday mornings. These sessions are free for club members and help develop water confidence and sailing skills in a structured and safe environment provided by seasoned sailors and parents at the club. Part of the lake, away from the main racing area, is buoyed off so the complete novice can begin in safety but with sufficient space to provide a challenge for the more experienced sailors.
For those starting out their sailing career, the club has a number of Oppies in which to learn the basics before buying a boat and also has a small selection of wetsuits and buoyancy aids that can be loaned at no charge. For the more experienced Optimist sailors and those who compete on the racing circuit, we offer training from RYA qualified coaches throughout the year. During the winter, the highly regarded IOCA Thames Valley Training takes place at Burghfield.
Oppie Club runs several social events throughout the year including the annual highlight, Oppie Camp, a whole weekend of on-site camping, fun and debauchery on and off the water. TGI Friday also runs over the summer months on specific Friday evenings - check the club calendar. It is open to all oppie, junior and youth sailors. Social sailing is followed by a BBQ on the club's balcony.
