About Burghfield Sailing Club
Burghfield Sailing Club is one of the largest inland sailing clubs in the UK. Our lake in the beautiful Kennet Valley provides over 200 acres of sailable water. This location benefits from a prevailing south-westerly wind which often makes for exciting race conditions. Woodland shelter at the bottom of the lake provides the perfect conditions for juniors and those learning to sail. Burghfield has a diverse membership and welcomes sailors of any ability, offering a family-friendly environment, whilst also offering some of the best inland dinghy racing in the country.
The Club boasts members who are national and even international champions. And is also the home of the Andrew Simpson Foundation's first inland centre, apt as BSC is where Andrew Simpson sailed whilst studying at the nearby Pangbourne college
There has been a sailing club on the site for over fifty years. Today the club supports two charities: Burghfield Sailability, providing sailing activities for the disabled and the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre (ASSF) supporting sailing skills development for children and adults alike. This direct access to qualified expert coaching benefits all members as there is usually somebody on-hand to offer a word of encouragement on sailing or sound advice about rigging. There is dedicated one-on-one training available for those looking to progress to the next level.
BSC is for the whole family. Whether you are an absolute beginner, a Sunday cruiser or an experienced racer, Burghfield will meet your needs. The club is also a Volvo RYA championship club. Our facilities include: an on-site chandlery, professionally catered canteen, licensed bar and a clubroom. Our balcony provides a panoramic view across the lake. Feel the atmosphere on race days as spectators gather to cheer and enjoy all the action when the boats come around the mark at buoy one which is always a crowd pleaser. Despite the size and diversity of membership BSC never feels cramped due to the size of our lake, shoreline and clubhouse.
On Sundays from April to September there is a thriving Optimist Club for budding younger members to begin their sailing. A great opportunity to get both kids and parents away from electronic gadgets and do something much more exciting as a family. Sunday Oppies is often an inspiration for parents who whilst sharing their kids joy, freedom and exhilaration, decide they want a piece of sailing action for themselves.
There is a thriving social scene at BSC with regular events throughout the year that provide an opportunity to establish lifelong friendships for both young and old.
New members are always welcome. Newcomers often comment on how approachable and friendly our members are, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The club office is open most days so if you would like to speak to someone about the club, do not hesitate to call. You are also very welcome to visit the club at weekends when Virginia our BSC Membership Manager is usually on site and who will take great delight in showing you around.
