Oppie Start Group (Burghfield Sailing Club members) - Stage 1 Week 3
Activity overview
This course is delivered over 6 weekly sessions covering Stage 1 of the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme using Burghfield Sailing Club Optimist dinghies and is run by Andrew Simpson Centres. The RYA Stage 1 course helps beginners gain confidence in a boat in a safe and supportive environment. Learn the essentials of sailing while having fun and developing basic skills.
Please note, the date you book is the first in the 6 week series, the remaining 5 sessions will be automatically booked for the following 5 weeks on the same day of the week and time. It may be possible to complete the syllabus if some sessions are missed, please speak to our team if you have any questions. If these dates are not suitable and we have enough participants coming forward for alternative dates, then it may be possible to change the course dates.

What to expect
- Introduction to boats, rigging, and safety equipment
- Basic boat handling, steering techniques and speed control
- Practical experience afloat in Burghfield Sailing Club Optimist dinghies
- Working with instructors to build confidence and understanding of the water
Usually run either as a morning (09:30-12:30) or afternoon (13:30-16:30) session for a 6 week series. Each week you will be welcomed by our team for registration. Please ensure that participants have been signed in by staff before you leave the site. At the course start time the instructors will come and meet the participants.
Once all participants are happy and fully equipped with all the clothing they need, then the activity sessions will get underway! There will usually be a break for a snack and drink midway through the session.
At the course end time please ensure that all participants are signed out by the parent or guardian with a member of staff, before leaving the site.
