Wednesday Evening Personal Handicap Series
Welcome to the Wednesday Evening Personal Handicap Series
In this series the slower boats and sailors start earlier in an attempt to provide every sailor with a chance of winning regardless of ability and boat. Sailors start in 30 second intervals which results in a small number starting at the same time removing those stressful starts.
Each week a new course in selected by the Race officer and marked up on the Race board under the balcony.
The start line is always between the flagpole on the clubhouse balcony and an outer distance marker (ODM) which is a buoy with an orange flag on top of a short pole. Do make a note of the course and don't always rely on following others as one day you might be the front runner! Allow yourself plenty of time to rig up and launch in time for your specified start time.
Your start time will be noted on the sign on sheet (see Wednesday Personal Handicaps spreadsheet below) if you have competed previously.
Create a new entry at the bottom of the printed sign on sheet in the club house if this is your first time. If you are just starting out and don't know how you compare to others on the sign on sheet, then give yourself -5 personal handicap. For regular club sailors, pick a racer who closely matches your ability and use their personal handicap (Do not start on a 0 handicap!). For Boat PY and Boat Start, there is normally a boat already in the list, simply copy that. If you cannot find your boat PY there, see our list of supported boats Pursuit times 2025 and their PYs and use a one that is close to yours. Do let us know that your boat is not on the list.
A GPS timer board is hung over the club balcony which displays the race time. It sounds a horn every 30 seconds from the start of the race until the last boat has started. It then signals a long horn blast at the end of race and the numerals flash. At this point hold your position until the race officer has recorded you. (They will be in the committee boat or safety boat). Do let others know around you who have not heard the end of race signal. Once you have been recorded you are good to return to shore.
